The WP Events Calendar Team is happy to announce the release of a beta version of EC 6.6.
This release fixes many issues that were reported by our users. The major one being the problems people faced with WP 2.8.
EC is now compatible with the most recent version of WordPress, a.k.a WP 2.8.4.
This is a beta release. That means that you folks have a job to do: testing this plugin and trying to kill it. And then, when you’ve done the assassination operation, make sure to write a complete report about your exploit in the bug tracker so we can resuscitate the poor thing.
On a more serious note, we have tried to make EC more robust so we can wait for the next generation Heirem is going to provide.
These are the issues we fixed:
- WPEC is now WP 2.7 and 2.8 ready. This fixes issues #20, #21 and #38.
- Fixed issue #16: Larger description in textarea.
- Fixed issue #17: Consistency with WP plugin UI conventions
- Fixed issue #18: displayLarge uses $options before it is set.
- Fixed issue #22: Click for more info not working
- Fixed issue #27: Events not showing on widget in public view.
- Fixed issue #29: Firefox reported 2 errors.
- Fixed issue #31: Start / End Times do not appear to take start / end date into consideration.
- Fixed issue #32: Tooltips doesn’t show correctly when there is a large amount of text in the description. This is partly resolved in fact. The tooltip will grow larger depending on the text size but a very large amount of text will still show this problem. I would suggest making a post if you have too much text.
- Fixed issue #34: Wrong timezone: US (am/pm) vs. European time.
- Fixed issue #37: Ajax character set problems with Spanish language (and other too for sure).
- Fixed issue #40: Post titles are incorrect when they contain an ‘.
- Fixed issue #42: Conflict with Register Plus plugin. pluggable.php is a BAD THING! When we start doing reminders and stuff like that, we may need to override some of these functions which will again break compatibility.
- Fixed issue #45: Showing incorrect day.
- Fixed issue #46: Widget in Sidebar will not change to Calendar view .
- Fixed issue #48: WordPress Database Error: invalid SQL syntax.
- Fixed issue #52: spacing between line too close.
- Fixed issue #56: Thickbox and ‘moving’ WordPress.
- Added license file and comments.
- Adapted the readme.txt file to the latest spec from wordpress.org
We hope you enjoy it.

Thanks for the update! Your hard work is definitely appreciated.
September 5, 2009, 8:44 pmOne problem: when using the widget, all images on the page are replaced with loading.gif (which looks pretty psychedelic). To solve this I removed all the lines that contain “loading.gif” in ec_js.class.php, most importantly the last one that does the preloading. This also gets rid of the little animation, but so be it.
But again: great work!
Cheers,
Thomas

Hi,
September 6, 2009, 5:51 amI use wordpress 2.8.4 and I’ve just upgrade the calendar (I was waiting for it!!) but it doesn’t work…I can’t add an event. I don’t see the calendar icon near the start and end date and the clock icon doesn’t work, i can’t select an hour of start and end of event and even if I wrote them by my hands and I push the button “add event” it doesn’t work, no events added. What can I do!? thank you!!

I’m afraid the latest (beta) version of the events calendar broke all my graphics links on the site. I found that by checking the jQuery Extrem Protection in the Events Calendar options page, the graphics would load, though the calendar would not display any events.
I then noticed that the comments link on blog posts was disabled. After playing with all the comments settings I could find I discovered that the now disabled but still active events calendar was causing this. Only after I deactivated the events calendar, would the comments link work.
All this on wordpress 2.8.4.

Hey, wanted to put this in the forums but posting a thread is not strait forward (at least for me :/ ) Any rate there are some issues with the 6.6 release that are pointed out here http://wordpress.org/support/topic/308372 . Pulled my hair out for a couple of hours trying to fix this. I can verify that the fixes andrewtf put forward do work. The main issue would be that jquery.clockpick.min.js needs to be renamed jquery.clockpick.1.2.7.js and the recent copy of this file used.

I upgraded to the new version and discovered that, for some reason, when the calendar view is enabled for the widget, none of the other graphics on the site will download (they show up as pulsating gray boxes).
Also, I noticed that when I upgraded, some location text had all of the spaces removed.
I will try to get this into the bug tracker, but I did not have time to sign up for an account right now.
If I downgrade to a previous version, are there any database issues I should be aware of?

To anyone else experiencing this problem, edit your events-calendar.php file and comment out the two lines references jquerydimensions.js (wp_enqueue_script(‘jquerydimensions.js’ blah blah blah). That returns all functionality.

Nice plugin. But the calendar somehow changes my sites header image to the loading animation image.. I haven’t been able to find the JS that does this, the header is in H1-tags with no class nor ID.
here is the page: http://etnologi.nu/?page_id=70
Go to any other page on the site to see the real header image. It is not a widget, but the code snippet from the description pasted into the index file of the theme.

When I upgraded to this my thickbox stopped working in NextGen Gallery and on the site front-end in general. I’ll have to downgrade so I can get that to work now. Seems to be a jquery error related to this plugin in its new version.

I am very, very sorry about that!
I’ll try to take care of all the issues next Friday… well next weekend (it’s probably going to take mucho time).
My computer crashed on me two days after I released 6.6. I lost practically everything: passwords (well, these were saved on gmail but without the password and gspace… and no, I don’t have a CD/DVD writer), bookmarks, plugins, (some) backups, my virtual hosts (where I was keeping all my versions)…, lots of config stuff…
I don’t know what happened. It looked like a disk crash, but after many restarts, somehow, it seemed to work again. I reinstalled the W thinghy over it and got a boot (lost my Ubuntu stuff though). But I had to reinstall lots of software.
I have been rebuilding my machine these last 2 weeks. FYI, I have been saving money these last few months. I still need to put a few $$$ away but I’m almost there and as soon as possible, I’ll buy a new machine and make it totally virtual. So, if one virtual server ever crashes, I’ll still be able to provide support. But “right” now, I’m stuck with this 7 years old dinosaur (did do the job though!) and have to rebuild it.
I’ll be back next Friday (I only work 3 days/week) and will try to address all issues.
Please, if possible, try to submit an issue to the bug tracker with all possible data. If you can provide steps to reproduce the error, that would be a huge help (plugins, themes, etc.).
Sorry again for my lack in answering.
Laplix

September 17, 2009, 9:38 pmRob says:
To date, the best solution I found was to revert to the previous version and manually add the widget to the sidebar.
Here it is in more detail.
1) Download the previous version available here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/events-calendar/download/
2) Deactivate and delete the plug-in in wp-content/plugins/events-calendar/
3) Upload and activate the plug-in.
4) Do not use the sidebar widget though the wordpress sidebar organizer, but instead, open the sidebar.php file and copy paste the code just before the Widgetized sidebar code.
It’s not exactly an eloquent solution but to the visitor, it’s pretty much if not exactly the same experience as before.

Hi Paplix,
Running WP 2.8.4
Installed your plugin 6.6-beta
As soon as I activated, I lost the ability to drag plugins “seamingless”. On ocassion, the Event Calendar plugin dragged over, but I didn’t get the usual “dotted line” placement cue, it just placed it on the bottom of list. Once there, I am not able to expand to see settings. Lastly, while it appears to have moved it over to my sidebar, it doesn’t save.
Sooo…looks like a great widget but messes up key functionality for managing widgets.
Looking forward for fix and I can understand your PC problems — been there!
Thank you for your work.

same here, 6.6 caused a problem with the javascript all over the blog and the dashboard.
and I got another problem: as 6.6 didn’t work, I downgraded to the former version – but that one doesn’t work anymore, too. The sidebar shows only that “stay tuned”-message and after removing the LIMIT $num in the ec_db.class.php (what someone posted as a quick’n'dirty-hack for that problem on the bugtracker) only the list is shown in the widget, the calendar’s not working. *hum*

Nontheless I’ve found a bug when the calender is used in a non YYYY-MM-DD environment. At the prompt for a new event it asks for DD-MM-YYYY, input however is taken as YYYY-MM-DD which results in events beeing placed in 20th September 2022 instead of placing it at 22th September 2009.

There are several bugs that I encountered with this plug-in. It causes some feature NOT to work in the administration area of word-press.
I will list them here:
1. In the dashboard area, the grey header bars will NOT toggle at ALL(open or close).
2. In the widgets area, the widgets will NOT drag at all.
3. Once I click on the preview button, it will NOT preview the changes at ALL, only when I click on the update button it will.
I like this plug-in A LOT, but I had to deactivate it for these features to function correctly. Please have these bugs rectified as soon as you can.

My 2.8.4 Report: This Plugin does not work in multiple areas making it unuseable. The Bugs I discovered so far:
- Javascript: Overall. It is not properly integrated. I assume an incompatible version of the jquery tools.
- Javascript: Calendar controll was not displayed on first usage.
- Javascript: Post Editing screen does not work any longer as long as javascript is turned on (this renders wordpress useless). IMHO It’s a shame that this has not been properly tested.
- Workflow: When decided to create a new post with the calendar entry, the calendar entry is not created.
I suggest next to the calendar display to display a list of invents you can browse. This is what other event plugins have as well and I think this is pretty usefull to navigate through dates and to DEBUG stuff, if you want to have beta-testers (as you state).
Additionally I suggest that linking a post with one (or more?) events should be made simpler, e.g. with an ajax’ed control (for the post ID) or by adding existing dates on the post edit screen (backend widget).
That’s my feedback so far, good luck for the project. Do you have SVN access to provide patches?

Any idea on the arrival of a fix? Even when I uninstalled and went back to previous version, I’m left with many of the problems from 6.6. Client likes functionality of this Plugin, so I’m stuck with a buggy all-around WP experience until I can get this updated. Thanks so much for your time.

Found a bug.
When trying to “Mass Activate” in WPMU 2.8.4 with a plug-in like Plugin Commander or Plugin Manager, you receive the following error:
“Error activating events-calendar/events-calendar.php for blog id=[the blog ID]:
Warning: Missing argument 2 for update_option(), called in [the directory]\wp-content\plugins\events-calendar\ec_db.class.php on line 211 and defined in [the directory]\wp-includes\functions.php on line 499″
Well, line 499 of functions.php requires update_option() to have to options with it, like so: update_option($option_name, $newvalue);
Line 211 of ec_db.class.php looks like this: update_option(‘widgetEventsCalendar’);
On line 200 of ec_db.class.php, there is another update_option() called with the values of (‘optionsEventsCalendar’, $options); so to fix my problem all I had to do was add the second value on 211 to include the $widget_options .
Final edit for line 211 of ec_db.class.php looks like this:
update_option(‘widgetEventsCalendar’, $widget_options);
After that, it mass activated perfectly. I’m pretty sure that editing that won’t cause an issue, but if I come across one I’ll be sure to let you know.
Thanks for the plugin!
-Josh
PS – I, too, have not been able to get any date/time pickers to work in the ‘add event’ area. Would be nice to have working for my users.

Developer: I really appreciate your work. This plugin fills a needing gap for many uf us. It was sad about your bad luck with your computer, hope you have recovered as much as possible.
It seems as it is possible to sum up the bugs in 6.6 this way:
1. There is a js-error replacing images sitewide with the loading.gif. By removing one line of js this was fixed.
2. The datepicker doesn’t work, dates has to be added manually.
3. The widgets get frozen, not possible to add new widgets.
4. Not possible to add tags to posts.
The bugs seems to be related to the WP-GUI connection, somehow.
Further: Will a recurring scheduler be included in the future?
All the best, we are waiting for the bug fixes. Thank you for an excellent product!

Does anyone bug test these ‘betas’? It totally broke all images on the sidebar for me, the JS has conflicts, widgets are no longer functioning as they should. IMHO someone should bug test that it actually works out of the box before doing a new release, regardless of ‘beta’ branding.
Really disappointed with this release, rolling back, hope it work, or just getting rid of it.
November 22, 2009, 8:44 pmÁlvaro Degives-Más says:
Frankly I’m sadly disappointed too: the beta works fine for us. No problems. I mean, what kind of beta testing is it when we don’t run into any serious issues!
Seriously, I love EC 6.6: very well done.
It runs fine on our current WP install (v2.8.6 now) and the only thing I’ve spent some more time on, is on styling. Which is done in the stylesheet, plain and simple. Anyone who knows what CSS is, can solve the odd cropping up theming issues. If I can make a suggestion: allow for the calendar’s CSS files to be dropped in the theme folder, and read from there if they exist there, so the thing can survive upgrades. But it works now, and it’s a beta.
So I guess I have to apologize for not being able to produce any substantial bugs…
Ah – one comment: it doesn’t make coffee (yet) and more seriously, I do eagerly look forward to an RSS feed for the event list widget… That’d be really awesome.
Thanks again!

Ah hey guys.
November 23, 2009, 6:46 pmI’m using your tool – it actually could be amazing if it would be working properly:
- widget function isn’t working
- the months in the widget disappear…
please try your best to provide a stable version. this script is really important to me, cause there is no other one like this.
Dominique Stender says:
The 6.6-beta has an issue with double quotes. You escape single quotes nicely but not double quotes. Since all options you provide force registration with password, I won’t go through that.
You might want to consider changing your quote detection to preg_match(‘/(\’|”)/’, …).
I found varying checks in ec_js.class.php, ec_calendar.class.php and ec_managamentjs.class.js
Please consider to make reporting bugs a little easier for the community. In the end everyone will profit from it. No offense.
Best regards and thanks for the really great plugin.

i discovered several problems in the backend of wp 2.9.1 while editing tags, status, publish-date etc. of posts – it didn´t work in firefox 3.5.7.
i found following solution for this problem: edit “events-calendar.php”, go to function EventsCalendarINIT() and add here as first line:

this hotfix prevents the events-calendar from loading the incompatible jquery-libs in backend…

February 7, 2010, 5:39 pmÁlvaro Degives-Más says:
Jens, at this point Rodries’ version (see right above your post) is probably your best bet as it has fixed a number of annoying issues that have crept up incrementally with new WP releases, post-2.8.x (i.e. with 2.9.x). It’s unfortunate that EC development is in a holding pattern now due to a variety of causes, but once it takes off again undoubtedly it’ll have a load of fixes and improvements. FYI we’re using the version Rodries has patched. By the way: many thanks Rodries! Much appreciated.

Re: version 6.6 of the EVENTS CALENDAR: I’m sorry, but I wish I hadn’t upgraded. Here’s why (an excerpt from an email from the web guy who’s helping with my website):
The new version of the calendar plug in appears to function a bit differently to how it used to. The default view now is not of a calendar but a list of the upcoming events. (The calendar view looked much better). However, now when it’s switched it back to calendar view, the date is no longer marked in red when an event is on (so no one would know).
Would you be able to change these things back to how they were, or should I revert to the old version??
Thanks, J. Lowe
February 24, 2010, 7:23 pmÁlvaro Degives-Más says:
Jessica, try Rodries’ version. We’re running WP 2.9.2 with it, and the mini calendar widget shows dates with events in red. If I recall correctly, that also was the case with the “regular” 6.6 beta, but sadly that has a slew of issues (most notoriously the “loading image” issue, substituting all images) that are at least fixed in Rodries’ improved version.
